In just 4 short weeks, the North Pacific Fishing Industry raised $85,000.00 to help restore the artisanal lobster fishery on Robinson Crusoe Island, the lifeblood of a community located 400 miles west of mainland Chile that was demolished by a tsunami in February.
Fishing gear and supplies such as outboard motors, winches, batteries, buoys, lines, radios and raincoats were purchased and delivered to Seattle’s Fisherman’s Terminal for the loading of the Chilean bound container.
The loading party represented the wide variety of project participants -- fishery groups, crabbers, trawlers, long-liners, fishing associations, gear suppliers and maritime businesses – which packed the container July 9th.
Additional donations will provide materials for winches and net sheds that the Robinson Crusoe fishermen will build for their small boat lobster fleet.
