FISHERY POLICY ANALYST
Have what it takes to be a land crabber, throwing the hook in to hundreds of pages of analyses and regulations? The Alaska Bering Sea Crabbers (ABSC) is seeking a highly motivated person to work on fishery policy issues for the crab fishery in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands. ABSC is a non-profit trade association representing harvesters of king, snow (opilio), and Tanner (bairdi) crab who commercially fish with pot gear. Our members include approximately 70 vessels and over 250 quota owners in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands Crab Rationalization Program.
Primary responsibilities - This position will work under the direction of the Executive Director and include the following responsibilities -
Represent and communicate Employer’s vision, mission, and core values to Employer’s staff, its members, the public at large, and governmental entities.
Work on select project(s) including, but not limited to, bycatch issues, harvest strategy approaches, IUU fishing/traceability, sustainable seafood certification, rationalization program reviews, new entrants, and electronic logbooks.
Responsibilities may include reviewing documents, providing summaries, collating available data and information, presenting information, drafting analytical documents and position papers, and drafting public comment letters, as directed.
Update ABSC outreach materials, as needed, and assist with newsletter drafting, website updates, or social media posts, as directed.
Other duties commensurate with the position that the Executive Director or Executive Assistant may assign from time to time.
Represent Employer to the North Pacific Fishery Management Council and its advisory bodies, the federal government, the State of Alaska, and other entities, as appropriate.
Travel may be required.
Education & Experience - Must have a master’s degree. Must have experience providing written reports, making oral presentations, and analyzing data. Experience working in commercial fisheries or government desired.
Skills and Abilities – Must have effective communication skills (both written and oral). Must have familiarity using Word, Excel, Cloud-based services, and social media. Must have ability to follow directions and effectively manage time. Must be self-motivated, trustworthy, diplomatic, and a critical thinker with sound decision-making skills. Mapping skills a plus. Ability to create infographics desired.
Hours/Compensation – Compensation based on experience. Position will be Seattle or Alaska based. Part or full-time, flexible schedule, and telework permitted.
